Sweet Iron

Sweet Iron bits are crafted from durable steel and feature a distinctive blue color. This material is designed to encourage natural salivation, enhancing your horse's comfort and promoting better acceptance of the bit.

Waterford

The Waterford mouthpiece features a series of rounded, flexible links that adapt to the shape of the horse’s mouth, ensuring even pressure distribution. Its multi-directional movement makes it challenging for the horse to take hold of the bit. Designed for experienced riders with soft hands, this bit offers a gentle effect but can become sharp under heavy rein pressure. Misuse or unstable hand usage can lead to severe damage in the horse’s mouth. Use only by professional riders or under the supervision of a trainer.

Pelham

A Pelham bit features a curb chain and shanks, applying pressure behind the ears to create leverage. A short-shanked Pelham is called a Baby Pelham, while a long-shanked version is a standard Pelham. The strength of the effect is determined by the length of the shanks and the curb chain. The longer the shanks, the sharper the impact. A Pelham can be used with two reins: one on the top ring for a soft grip and one on the bottom ring for added leverage. Alternatively, one rein can be used with a connecting strap (Bridge). Pelhams are often used to help set a horse deeply, especially with stronger horses, but they are not suitable for inexperienced riders or horses due to their strong effect.

If a rider is using a Pelham for the first time, or wishes to try it on a strong horse, we advise starting with a baby Pelham instead of a common Pelham

Understanding Color Changes

Sweet Iron bits naturally change color over time as they come into contact with humidity. The vibrant blue surface will transition to a greyish-brown tone due to oxidation. This process is entirely normal and improves the bit’s functionality by creating a sweet taste that stimulates salivation and enhances acceptance.

If the bit isn’t used regularly, a thicker layer of rust may form. This is easily removed with a brush or cloth before use to maintain the bit's performance.

Why Proper Sizing Matters

Choosing the correct bit size is essential for your horse’s comfort and performance. A bit that is too small can create painful pressure points and damage the mouth, while a bit that is too large may slide through the horse's mouth, causing discomfort and pinching the corners, potentially leading to wounds. Always ensure the bit fits snugly without being restrictive to keep your horse comfortable and responsive.
